Be on the lookout for Vikter Duplaix

Philadelphia or 'Philly' as it's amply known as nowadays was the mecca for soul music in the 70s and early 80s with Gamble and Huff's PIR (Philadelphia International Records) and TSOP (The Sounds of Philadelphia) records ruling the airwaves. But then in the late 80s and 90s it was just 'the city of brotherly love' with the sound of music nowhere in sight as far as soul was concerned.

Enter the new millennium and the appearance of newcomer Jill Scott, the Philly lass who's beautiful and sensual voice took the world by storm. All were hailing her praise and rightfully so and then came Bilal, Musiq Soulchild  (known nowadays as Musiq) The Roots, Jazzyfatnasties and Jaguar Wright just to name a few and with all of this talent emerging, Philly's soul music wasn't dead and buried but merely in hibernation for the last decade and a half. With that said, enter the latest Philadelphian to emerge his name: Vikter Duplaix - a name you should look out for in the very near future.

The song in question here is 'Sensuality' a smoking house groover that had me hopping from start to finish. Vikter's voice at times reminds me of a young Ray Parker Jr for it's distinctive baritone but with a full length currently under way and set for release early next year this young man has a bright future ahead for him.

Jazzyfatnasties sophomore set due this fall

The darling ladies known as Jazzyfatnastees (Mercedes Martinez and Tracey Moore) are back to delight us with their smooth sounds of soul and jazz with their sophomore set 'The tortoise and the Hare' in stores Sept 3rd on (Cool)

The follow up to their critically acclaimed debut 'The Once and the Future' finds the duo in fine form once again supplying us with a host of tracks to uplift you and help you through the working day of whatever you are doing. The Roots hand is again in play as far as production duties are concerned and songs like 'Love Junkie' and 'The Lie' are strong contenders for radio play. The lead off single has yet to be determined and the lack of a track listings on their site seems very evident but if the tracks I've heard of so far is any indication to what's in store for us on the album then be rest assured - it lives up to it's expectations.

Newcomer Vivian Green - the next Alicia Keys?

With the success of Alicia Keys and Ashanti on (J Records and Murder Inc) it was only a matter of time before the major labels got in on the act and Sony seems to have notched up a fresh new face to enter the game. Her name is Vivian Green, a 23 year old native of Philadelphia (there's 'Philly' again) who's about to release her debut A Love Story on Columbia/Sony Music.

The singer/songwriter makes a statement by writing every song on the entire album and has a little something for everyone to enjoy. Inspiration for songs came from former relationships to current fiancé and  and states as she puts it 'What I’ve experienced is just my version of the same things we all go through. I’ve learned that when you love yourself, love will find you, and though hurdles will come, no dream is unreachable. This is my story...A Love Story'. The album is due out October 29th - look out for it (there will be comparisions).

Donnie's debut set for October 22nd release

At last - the long awaited debut release from Donnie called 'The Coloured Section' has got a release date set for Oct 22. The Atlanta native has dropped several singles since I first heard 'Heaven sent' last year (namely 'Do you know?' and 'Our new national anthem') but the full length is in tow and is primed for our listening ear.

All of us who are Donnie fans are well aware of this young man's talents as a singer who has been compared to the late legendary great Donnie Hathaway and all has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the full length. This one should be a good one throughout if the current singles that's come our way is any indication so do your bit and get it once it hits your local record shelves.
