Jagged Edge and R. Kelly take top honors @ SoulTrain Awards

R. Kelly and Jagged Edge earned top honors at the 15th annual Soul Train Music Awards, which took place on Feb. 28 at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. The two-hour syndicated television special was aired in most major markets this past Saturday.

Jagged Edge walked away with the awards for Best R&B/Soul Single and Best R&B/Soul Album in the group, band, or duo category, Meanwhile R. Kelly earned top honors in the male category for Best R&B/Soul Single and Best R&B/Soul Album. Picking up her first music industry statuette following a shutout at the Grammys and Brit Awards was Jill Scott, who won for Best R&B/Soul album - female (and rightfully so). Contemporary gospel artist Yolanda Adams beat out the likes of Erykah Badu, Mary J. Blige, and Jill Scott for Best RNB/Soul single - female (you figure it out).

Receiving this year's
Sammy Davis Jr. Award for Entertainer of the Year were Destiny's Child and Jay-Z the 1st time the award has been shared by two artists, while the Isley Brothers were given the Quincy Jones Award for outstanding career achievement. Congrats to all the nominees and winners.

Shawn 'Puffy' Combs takes the stand in his own defence

Bad Boy CEO head Sean "Puffy" Combs will be taking to the witness stand at his gun possession trial in New York, Combs who testified on March 1 said  "I thought I was the intended victim" when the shooting broke out at a Times Square nightclub. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman asked "Do you know who was being shot at?" and replied Puffy. "No. I thought I was being shot at. My hands were up. I started to go down. Everybody started falling all over each other."

Among the people falling on top of him, he added, was his bodyguard,
Anthony "Wolf" Jones, who is also charged with gun possession. Combs said the gunfire rang out shortly after Jones accompanied him and his then-girlfriend, singer-actress Jennifer Lopez, from the VIP section of Club New York to the exit early on Dec. 27, 1999.

'The Brothers' are ready to hit the theatres and stores

'The Brothers' are here and are ready to take on the world (at the movies that is). The latest buddy flick stars comedian D.L Hughley, Morris Chestnut, Shemar Moore and Bill Bellamy as 4 long time friends who tackle the issues of love and life in our modern day society. The movie opens up this month at a theatre near you so check it out won't you.

Speaking of checking it out be sure to check out the soundtrack as well (available on Warner Bros) it is bound to be this year's first big soundtrack with the line up it boasts. RL (from Next), Snoop Dogg (he's everywhere nowadays) Gerald and Eddie Levert, Jermaine Dupri and Frankie Beverly and Maze to name a few. The lead off single will be Eric Benet's 'Love don't love me' written and produced by Eric himself especially for the soundtrack. One not to be missed here so go see the flick and get the music afterwards.

NY DJ Angie Martinez releases debut album

NY resident Hot 97 DJ Angie Martinez will have her debut album hit record stores this April. The latin lass first came to our attention on the all female rap track "Not Tonight" which featured Lil' Kim, Missy Elliott, Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez and Da brat (from the "Nothing to lose" soundtrack).

The new album called Up close and Personal will feature the who's who of the rap and RNB world. Acts such as Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, Beanie Sigel, Mary J. Blige and the late Big Pun all lend their rapping and vocal chords to the project slated for an April 17th release date. The lead off single 'Mi Amour' featuring Jay-Z has already gone to radio.

Newcomer Jahiem wants to give the world his 'Ghetto Love'

What's all the fuss about well take a listen to newcomer Jahiem 'Jah' Hoagland debut album 'Ghetto Love' and you will see why there's a buzz on this yougster. The New Jersey native is no overnight sensation as his track record would indicate (he was a 3 time winner at the Apollo at the age of 15) and with the death of his mom 2yrs later made him determined to go for it.

He shopped his demo which would eventually fall in the hands of Naughty by Nature's Kay Dee and once he listened to it then proceeded to get the young man a deal with Warner Bros. The album called 'Ghetto Love' is getting comparisons to a young Luther Vandross and Teddy Pendergrass  (who incidently is one of the youngster's idols) and finds Kay Dee serving as executive producer as well as songs penned by RL (from 'Next' fame), Blackstreet's Eric Williams and Jah himself. The set boost an array of tracks for both the RNB and Rap enthusiast including a beautiful duet with Terry Dexter amply entitled 'Remarkable' which will no doubt be the wedding track to call upon this year.
