Gil Scott-Heron sentenced to go to prison

Jazz musician and poet Gil Scott-Heron was sentenced to one to three years in a state prison today Monday (Oct. 29) in a New York court, after he failed to appear to an Oct. 1 hearing regarding the mandatory drug rehabilitation required by his plea bargain on an earlier drug possession charge.

According to a district attorney spokesperson, the plea required Scott-Heron to enter a residential drug treatment program, but his failure to do so, coupled with his no-show at the Oct. 1 hearing, resulted in the jail term. Best known for such songs as "The revolution will not be televised", "Johannesburg" and "The Bottle" Scott-Heron recently had a number of his albums reissued by TVT.
